To commemorate this centennial anniversary, York Region is organizing a year-long celebration packed with free activities, events and historical exhibits for everyone to enjoy. YARD MATERIAL
From now until November, leaf and yard material will be picked up curbside every other week on your regular collection day. Place leaf and yard material in biodegradable Kraft paper bags, open rigid containers or bushel baskets. Reminder: Grass clippings will not be collected. For more information, click below.
BACKYARD COMPOSTER SALE
While supplies last, York Region residents can order a backyard composter online for only $35.00 each which includes home delivery, tax, and a composting guide. Composters often retail for over $100 each. Composting saves you money by turning your kitchen scraps, like fruit and vegetable peels, and yard waste like leaves, into natural, nutrient-rich compost to feed your trees, lawn and garden. MARKHAM’S PRIVATE PLUMBING PROTECTION REBATE PROGRAM
This program has been extended to April 2027 and offers financial support up to $5,000 for qualified property owners who install eligible flood protection devices. Pre-approval is required. SCAM ALERT: The City of Markham does not contact homeowners directly for this program so please beware of individuals posing as City employees asking to inspect or install flood protection devices such as sump pumps and backwater valves. FREE YORK REGION PARENTING PROGRAM
The Transition to Parenting program is a FREE, 9-week, group-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program for pregnant and postpartum individuals with babies up to 18 months of age. It is for mothers who have been feeling one or more of the following: depressed, sad, anxious, worried, angry or overwhelmed. Click below to learn more.
SENIORS
NEW LOW-INCOME SENIORS PROPERTY TAX ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
As announced in A Strong Markham: Budget 2024, this new programwas introduced to provide relief to eligible low-income seniors by providing a flexible, interest-free repayment plan option for their property tax arrears.
Eligible seniors approved for the program will have the late payment charges on their existing property tax arrears forgiven as a measure to provide immediate relief and prevent further financial burden. Additionally, once their arrears are addressed, seniors will have the option to be enroled in the City’s tax deferral program, which will freeze property tax increases until their property is sold.
