FREE EARTH DAY CELEBRATION – Apr. 20, 10 am to 3 pm, 179 Enterprise Blvd. (Markham Centre)

The City of Markham is celebrating Earth Day with an event that will provide residents with a fun and educational take on environmental issues for all ages. This year’s event, the first in-person celebration since the pandemic started, will include wildlife conservation animal booths, free electric vehicle test drives, and a sustainability fair. Take a ride the Pride of the Carousel and complete the passport activity to enter a raffle for a prize! Click below for more information.

MARKHAM ANIMAL ADOPTION AND EDUCATION CENTRE (MAAEC) ADOPTION EVENTS

Are you ready to find your new best friend? Located at the Thornhill Community Centre and formerly known as Markham Cat Adoption and Education Centre, they will now host adoption weekends where you can find cats, small dogs, bunnies and other furry friends, subject to availability. No appointments are necessary – just drop in! April dates include the 20th and 21st and more will be held each month.  Click below for more information.

SMALL BUSINESS GRANT – SUMMER COMPANY

Applications are open now for the Summer Company program, an entrepreneurship program for students ages 15 to 29 that provides funding up to $3,000 as well as hands-on training and mentoring to start and run a company over the summer. To learn more and apply before May 17, click below.

CRIME

BANK INVESTIGATOR SCAM ALERT

Since December 2023, York Regional Police has received several reports from citizens across the region who have been contacted by suspects posing as bank investigators. The victims are told that their debit or credit cards have been compromised and they are asked for their card numbers and Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) for ‘verification’ purposes.  Even if they know your name, never give your personal or financial information to someone unknown, especially over the phone. Instead, hang up and call your bank at the number provided on your debit or credit card to inquire if there is any problem.

CCTV COMMUNITY CAMERA PROGRAM LAUNCH

York Regional Police’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Community Camera Program will go live this April.  The program will help ensure our community remains among the safest in Canada by supporting crime prevention, improving investigative capabilities and enhancing community safety. MARKHAM MUSEUM’S “NOMINATE A SUPERHERO”

The Museum is looking to celebrate Markham’s Everyday Superheroes in a new exhibition.  Nominate a person (living or deceased), group, or organization that makes Markham a great place to live, including yourself, who represents the core themes of compassion, care, inclusion and representation in the community.  Click below for more information and the nomination form.

FREE FOUND SOUNDS EVENT – Saturday, April 6, 2 pm to 4 pm, Varley Art Gallery

Musicians from one of the Gallery’s current exhibitions, “Lost and Found”, will gather to play. The exhibit is a public art project conceived by artist duo Holly Ward and Kevin Schmidt.  The project unfolded as a series of constructed situations along the Rouge River Trail in Unionville throughout the summer and fall of 2023. FREE THE CANADIAN ART HOP EVENT – Thursday to Sunday, April 25 to 28, Weekday: 12pm to 4pm, Weekend: 10am – 5 pm, Varley Art Gallery

The Canadian Art Hop is a Canada-wide weekend devoted to the discovery and celebration of Canadian art and art galleries. It will spotlight the diverse and dynamic tapestry of arts. Visitors can expect to discover a variety of mediums and artists in the current exhibitions.

BACKYARD TREE PLANTING PROGRAM – LEAF

LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about trees. LEAF offers subsidized native tree planting services for residents of Markham, with a special discount endorsed by Markham’s Trees for Tomorrow initiative.
