MARKHAM LIVING – January 2024

VARLEY ART GALLERY

It is an honour to serve the community as a Board member of the Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham. We work year-round to support the Varley Art Gallery of Markham, an award-winning cultural jewel in the heart of our community. For example, the Foundation is supporting a new dynamic Varley website to launch in 2024 that will enhance the visitor experience, including an interactive floor map, audio tours, expanded exhibition content, and easy program registration and rental bookings.

There is always something exciting and engaging happening at the Varley and below are some of the other ways you can enjoy and support the Gallery. For more information, please visit:

WINTER IS HERE!

Enjoy the season!
You can find a list of all outdoor community skating rinks on the City of Markham’s website at markham.ca/skating. Please be advised that skating on ponds, stormwater ponds and waterways is strictly prohibited. Skating on these surfaces is dangerous due to multiple variables that contribute towards thin ice. For your safety, only skate on community skating rinks within the City of Markham.
If you prefer to go on a winter wonderland walk with family and friends, the Winter Parks Pathway Maintenance Program totals 25.3 km city-wide maintained within 24 to 48 hours following the end of a winter event. To check locations by ward, please visit:

Winter Season Parking Rules

In the winter season from November 15 to April 14 and during snow clearing operations, ALL parking on City streets is prohibited. When snow clearing operations are not in effect, parking is permitted ONLY on the odd-numbered side of City streets to allow for greater vehicular access in both directions and make streets safe for all. Existing parking permits and overnight exemptions held by residents are not valid during snow clearing operations. Vehicles parked on a city street during snow clearing operations will be ticketed and/or towed.

Winter Maintenance App

The City of Markham has created an app that shares up-to-date snow clearing operations allowing residents to plan for parking accordingly. It also includes information of what road conditions are expected before snow clearing operations would commence for each service area. For more information on winter road services and this App, please visit:

Snow Windrow Removal Assistance Program
This program is designed to help disabled and elderly residents maintain road access from their driveways during the winter season. To qualify, all individuals residing in the household must be 60 years or older or younger than 12 years of age (proof of age is required). If any members of the household are between the ages of 12 years and 60 years, a current and valid doctor’s certificate confirming they are physically unable to clear snow must be provided.
Crews will be dispatched to clear the right side of snow windrows facing the road (one car width only) on all roads following a 7.5 centimetres (3 inches) snow fall. Windrows will be cleared within 8 hours after crews plow the road. The City reserves the right to decide when snow windrow service will take place. Also note that the windrow left from the sidewalk plow is not included in this service.
